In October, the sun is diminishing by the day, but gardens continue to please the eye with the rich colours of many ornamental plants. Although we often think of asters as the main flower this month, there are many other plants that also develop their full beauty at this time.

1. Perennials flowering in October

 

Cosmos

Distinctive features: Tall with beautiful feathery foliage, comes in a wide range of colours
Light requirements: Full sun
Care requirements: Regular deadheading, pruning after first bloom in spring

A great border plant that has a long flowering season, from spring to October. Cosmos comes in a wide range of colours and therefore makes any garden bed a joy to look at. They are also a favourite amongst pollinators.

 

Marigold

Distinctive features: Bright colours in shades of red, orange or yellow
Light requirements: Full sun
Care requirements: Regular deadheading as well as watering and fertilisation

This annual flower decorates not only your borders, but also any flower pot. Its bright red, orange or yellow colour are an eyecatcher and attract bees and other beneficial insects. Thanks to their long flowering season, from spring well into autumn, they are a great choice for your garden.

 

Heather

Distinctive features: Small, needle-like leaves
Light requirements: Full sun to partial shade
Care requirements: Acidic and moist soil, light pruning in spring

Heather is a shrub with small, needle-like leaves that turn intense shades of purple, pink or white. Heather blooms from August to October, bringing colour to the garden at a time when other plants are already in bloom. 

 


2. Bulbous and tuberous flowers that can bloom in October

 

Onion bulb

Distinctive features: Blue or purple flowers
Light requirements: Full sun
Care requirements: Moist soil and regular weeding

Some species of onion bulb can flower in late summer or early autumn, and their flowers are usually blue or purple.

 

Saffron crocus

Distinctive features: Particularly intense purple colour
Light requirements: Full sun
Care requirements: Moderate watering, fertilise soil

Although most crocuses flower in spring, some varieties, such as the saffron crocus, can bloom as late as October. The flowers of the saffron crocus have a particularly intense purple colour.

Butterfly bush

Distinctive features: Spike-shaped inflorescences that attract butterflies
Light requirements: Full sun
Care requirements: Regular deadheading, pruning in spring

This is a plant with large, narrow leaves and distinctive spike-shaped inflorescences that attract butterflies, but also other beneficial insects. Its flowers come in shades of purple, pink, white and blue and can be admired from summer to autumn,

 

Hydrangea

Distinctive features: Flowers turn blue with acidic soil
Light requirements: Partial shade, shade
Care requirements: Pruning after flowering season

Hydrangea is one of the most prized ornamental shrubs that impresses with large inflorescences in shades of pink, blue, white and purple. Hydrangeas flower in summer, but their flowers last until October, changing colours depending on the pH level of the soil.

 

Honeysuckles

Distinctive features: Different varieties of shrubs or vines, fragrant flowers, shaped like trumpets
Light requirements: Partial sun
Care requirements: Pruning and fertilizing

Honeysuckles bloom until late autumn. Their flowers are usually tubular, in yellow, orange or red. They continue to bloom on the vines in October, making showy ornaments.
