2. Choosing the right bulbs

When choosing bulbs make sure to select firm and undamaged ones. You should also take into account the position you want to plant them in and ensure the bulbs you are considering are suitable for it. From an aesthetical point of view it is wise to choose bulbs depending on the colour and height of the individual flower in order to ensure they go well together and will please the eye when blooming.

3. Plant bulbs

When to plant

Spring bulbs are typically planted throughout autumn. Mostly during October and November. Depending on the type of flowers you choose and the climate zone you live in, this period can vary, including also September and December months. The main rule here is to plant well before the first frost hits, ideally no later than 6 weeks before.

How to plant bulbs

Planting bulbs is generally easy, but there are some rules to bear in mind for colourful spring beds:
1.        Dig a hole about 2-3 times deeper than the bulb is tall
2.        If needed add nutrient to your soil
3.        In the hole place the bulb with the root down and the shoot upwards
4.        Leave enough space between bulbs, about twice the width of the bulb
5.        Cover completely with soil and ideally add mulch on top
6.        Water well straight after planting

4. Tips for healthy bloom

After successfully selecting firm, undamaged bulbs you can go ahead and plant them in their ideal spot. This can either be in flower beds or in pots. Adding compost to your soil is always a good idea and will provide additional nutrients. Last but not least you should avoid overwatering, while at the same time ensuring moist soil.
