How to choose the best garden tractor for your yard?

From property size to engine power: 7 essential factors to consider before buying your garden tractor

We truly are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing a garden tractor. From petrol to battery-powered models and various cutting methods the choice can be overwhelming. So which model is the right one for our needs?

This guide will help you identify your perfect garden tractor, that will not only save you time, but transform your garden into the best shape it's ever been.

Read on to learn about the key factors to consider before making the purchase. Whether it's the size of your garden or the terrain, the engine type, cutting width or maintenance requirements, there is a lot to consider. But fear not, we will guide you through the process.

1. Consider your property size and terrain

The physical characteristics of your garden are the first determinant in your choice. The most crucial detail is the size of your garden. Is it small to mid- sized and requires high maneuverability to navigate narrow gaps or awkward flower beds, a compact model is ideal. Choose a tractor with a collecting bag to keep the area tidy. In addition, a compact cutting deck makes your machine a swift and nimble garden ally. However for expansive green spaces of 13,000 m² or more, efficiency is key. Models designed for side discharge, allow you to cover vast areas without stopping to empty a bag.

Bear in mind also the terrain and slopes you want to work on. Is your ground rough or sloping, traction is vital. For steep or challenging terrain, consider 4WD (four-wheel drive) models to ensure safety and performance.

Recommended action: Measure your lawn's square footage and assess the terrain. Choose compact, agile mowers for complex small gardens, and wider, side-discharge or 4WD models for large, open or sloping fields.

2. Engine type and power

The market has shifted significantly, offering you a choice between traditional power and modern innovation, ie battery power.

Battery-powered tractors offer the "deal of a lifetime" by providing the same cutting performance as petrol but without fumes, less noise and significantly lower running costs. Opting for battery tractors you benefit from direct power delivery with zero energy loss, smoother acceleration and consistent blade performance even under heavy loads.

For the tranditionalists amongst us there are of course still petrol engines available. These machines are ideal for specific heavy-duty tasks or extremely large professional areas.

Recommended action: Choose electric tractors for a future-proof, quiet and low-maintenance experience that saves money in the long run. Stick to petrol if you require specific mechanical heavy-duty configurations not yet fully met by battery options in your region.

3. Grass handling: collector, side discharge, or mulching explained?

How you manage the grass clippings defines the finish of your lawn. Some might not even be aware of the different cutting methods and their benefits.

If you want a pristine, debris-free lawn, choose a tractor with a collector bag. These bags are usually quite spacious and the grass is collected efficiently. On the other hand side deflectors allow for high-speed mowing. A great choice for rough, overgrown grass or large paddocks where you don't need to collect clippings. While collecting and side discharge are great, the true hero is the mulching technology that shreds grass into tiny particles that fall back onto the lawn, fertilizing the soil. This method is ideal for maintaining a lush, healthy green lawn during the growing season.

Recommended action: Select collecting for a tidy finish, side discharge for tall/wild grass and mulching to naturally fertilize and improve lawn health

4. Transmission type: manual or hydrostatic?

A positive driving experience is essential to avoid feeling tired after mowing.

Traditional, manual gear shifting is robust and often found on entry-level models, offering a lower price point, but requiring more effort to operate. While a hydrostatic allows for smoother speed control via a pedal. It offers greater comfort and precision, especially when maneuvering around obstacles. Even easier is the electric one-pedal system, which is found on newer electric tractors. This system allows to manage the machine with a single foot, offering the smoothest and most intuitive driving experience.

Recommended action: For maximum comfort and ease of use, choose hydrostatic or electric one-pedal drive. Choose manual only if budget is the primary constraint.

5. Consider cutting width

The deck size determines how fast you finish the job but also where you can fit. Since navigating through garden gates or between tight flowerbeds can often be a challenge, we recommend to choose a narrow deck (e.g. 72-84cm). These machines are designed for agility in complex gardens. While on the other hand a wider deck (e.g. 108-125cm) is essential for open fields. These models reduce the number of passes required to mow a large area, significantly saving time.

Recommended action: Measure the narrowest gate or path in your garden. Choose the widest deck that fits through those gaps to maximize efficiency.

6. Frequency of use

Even the frequency of your mowing dictates the machine you need.

If you mow infrequently and let the grass grow tall between cuts, a side discharge tractor is necessary to handle the volume of grass without clogging. For regular, weekly mowing however, mulching is the best method, as it feeds the lawn. Electric tractors are particularly good here as they are "always ready" with low preparation time.

Recommended action: For weekly maintenance, prioritize mulching or collecting capabilities. For occasional maintenance of long grass, prioritize side discharge power.

7. Maintenance and spare parts availability

Buying a tractor is a long-term investment, so consider the upkeep.

Battery-powered tractors drastically reduce the need for maintenance. No oil changes, spark plugs or air filters to worry about. As a direct result you have only 1/3 the maintenance costs of petrol equivalents. This is due to the fact that petrol tractors require regular servicing (oil, filters, belts).

Recommended action: Choose an electric tractor for the lowest maintenance and operating costs (saving up to 90% on energy vs fuel)

8. Tips

Choosing the right garden tractor depends on balancing your terrain, lawn size, and personal preference for maintenance and comfort.

For a compact cutting deck and agile mowing solution we recommend the STIGA Swift. It also comes with 4 shareable ePower batteries, that can be used on your hand tools and other STIGA equipment. For rough ground, that requires traction STIGA Park front mowers provide unmatched maneuverability, thanks to their 50:50 articulated steering, while the Estate and Tornado range offers a great selection on 4WD models.

In 2026 STIGA releases new electric tractors, that are powered by ePower Pro batteries—removable, portable, and swappable. This gives you the opportunity to customize your energy needs by operating with 1 or 2 batteries depending on the garden size.

Is mulching your preferred cutting method? Then opt for STIGA's iconic Multiclip technology, that shreds grass into tiny particles. They fall back onto the lawn and fertilize the soil every time you mow.

STIGA provides a 5-year warranty on tools (check specific terms) and ensures spare parts availability, giving you peace of mind for the machine's lifespan
